So, if you treat yourself to this enchanting break, meandering around ancestral trails that carve through the mountains and plateaux in equal measure, what can you expect?
A total change of scenery guaranteed, just over the border!
Firstly, this amazing, sublime, lush-green high altitude hike is full of flair with small hilltop villages and mild Mediterranean ways that evoke a truly authentic Italian charm.
Secondly, an overdose of cheeky hairpins and a feast of bends grip the mountain, emphasising the chasm between the open sea and the alpine peaks… Beautiful… Come on, let's go!...
A beefy trail is entwined with the river, nosing about in every nook and cranny under the cool canopy of olive, chestnut and eucalyptus trees, hazels, oaks, beech and ash trees, hornbeams, cypress and pines and all different kinds of conifers... From one valley to the next, you'll have plenty of opportunity to take off in search of thrills on the heady alpine pasture beyond the dense blanket of green.
Suddenly, a shadow is cast over our heads. Almost brushing us with its magnificent wingspan, an eagle soars over the mountain, regal and carefree...
Your day by day program
Get ready for the adventure, yoyoing between sea and mountain!
Similar to the village of Zuccarello, medieval fortresses, proud and impregnable, sit squarely on the lowest headland. Narrow streets provide plenty of opportunity for venturing... To Barnineto, where the explorers are greeted by a lunch of mushroom pasta…
We set off along the alpine pasture trail dotted with little flowers, with sheep and goats in the mountain pasture, overtaking entire herds amid the gentle sounds of fervent bleating mingled with ringing bells. Yet another piece of breathtaking mountain scenery winding its way through La Brigue, la Vallée des Merveilles and Col de Tende.
The stunning landscape is ever-present. Our daytime trips revolve around a succession of winding roads and hairpin bends that are bound to bring a smile to your face. On the quest for altitude and invigorating fresh air, the mountain passes just keep on coming…
Next, San Bernardo di Conio, yet another medieval stronghold classified among the countless and authentic charming villages passed through, firm under our wheels, with magnificent and beautifully designed stone bridges spanning a crystalline green river. Most of these bridges are of Roman heritage, but a few of them date back to the Napoleonic Wars!
Under their arches, clear running water gushes down and whirls into deep rocky basins. A little dip in one of these rock pools is very tempting...
Under the snow-capped peaks, overhanging crests look down onto the turquoise coves of the gleaming Mediterranean.
Breakfast on the balcony overlooking the lapping sea.
From our idyllic lodgings, balanced on the Mediterranean shore, the path immediately gives way to cooler surroundings, engulfed by an incredible canopy of all manner of vegetation: eucalyptus, pines, sweet chestnut trees and many others. You may even find a few creepers clinging to your handlebars every so often...
In a daring slalom, the path weaves steeply down slopes dotted with olive trees. The last bend shoots onto the weathered cobblestones of Ortovero.

- Who can take part?
With challenging routes that take us from sea level right up to an altitude of 2000 m or more, this motorised hike is definitely classed as enduro and is clearly geared towards more experienced riders. You can easily step it down a gear though at any time by opting for more hospitable paths, and this gives you the option of joining an established group (private session) which is more of a "discovery trip".
- A Trail Rando guide will supervise the team on board their own vehicle.
At the same time, a chase vehicle will transport your luggage between stages every day. They will travel by road with regular meeting points along the route.
They can also pick up a rider and vehicle in the event of breakdown or exhaustion. The team also has a basic first aid kit, tools, some spare parts and is able to lend a hand if required.
- Each time the group needs to change direction, the ride leader signals to the second rider (the rider on the motorcycle immediately behind) to stop. That second rider positions himself/herself as a marker so that he/she is visible to the other riders on the outside of the bend. He/she indicates to the others which direction to take by blocking the wrong direction, with the vehicle facing in the right direction.
The riders in the group each go in front of him/her one at a time.
The sweep always ensures the progression of the group. The marker then takes up the last position in the convoy in front of the sweep. And so on and so forth as you progress, crossroads, changes of direction and any hazards to be signalled.
The benefit of this "drop off" system is undeniable; it creates more fluid movement, avoiding repeated stops for the whole group at each change of direction. The time saved means that everyone can soak up the landscape and make the most of the route.
